Thousands of people will "walk all over" Frank Beamer
this fall, and he's happy about it. The Virginia Tech football coach has teamed
up with a local Virginia farming family to help enhance their already popular
fall festivities.
Each summer, Eric and Sharon Layman, of Layman Family
Farms in Bedford (www.laymanfamilyfarms.com),
turn one of their cornfields into a work of art. They create a maze, which is
used as the center piece of their annual Pumpkin Festival (Sept 8 - Nov 5). This
year's first cut took place this week and it's easy to see that Coach Beamer's
likeness is the subject of this 10 acre masterpiece.
"We just really
like what Coach Beamer is all about," says Eric Layman, of Layman Family
Farms. "We have a lot of respect for him. I'd like to think that we share
a lot of the same philosophies and values in the way we go about our business
and the way we try to treat people. He's a legend here in the state and we're
honored to have him in our cornfield. We also know it will be a big hit with the
community."
The Layman's farm is located in beautiful Bedford County
and produces fresh fruit and produce during the summer months. In the fall, Layman
Family Farms opens its' gates for eight consecutive weekends to the public for
a host of activities and festivities geared toward children of all ages.
"I
can honestly tell you that I've had a lot of requests over the years," says
Frank Beamer with a smile, "but this is the first time anybody has ever asked
if it would be okay to cut my face into 10 acres of corn."
"They're
hard working, good people," continues Beamer, "and they open up the
maze to elementary students for field trips and that gets those kids out moving
around and active, so, I told them if they really wanted to cut me into the corn,
have at it."
"Whether you're a Virginia Tech fan, UVA fan, or
whatever, I think it's safe to say that everybody respects Coach Beamer,"
says Layman. "All of us here at the farm really wanted him to agree to it,
and when he did, we knew that it would be a lot of fun. We're very grateful."
And,
what's with "FRANK FOR PRESIDENT" at the top of the design?
"You
noticed that," Layman says with a big laugh. "Well, it's election season
and we thought that Coach Beamer would make a great President. Hey, if he attacked
gas prices the way he attacks special teams, we'd have 'em licked."
